Approach

Approach

To face the challenge of an extreme variability of precipitation and unpredictable shifts in the rainy season, AgRAIN is developing a framework consisting of precipitation monitoring and forecast, which can be used by farmers, to improve their irrigation management. Additionally, an underground water storage system will be developed that operates in a smart way by using the precipitation data. This system can be used to harvest surplus rainwater to bridge dry periods, stabilize yields, and to enable a second growing period e.g. for the cultivation of vegetables.
The project consists of 5 work-packages, focusing on scientific research questions / technological development, and coordination, knowledge exchange and dissemination. The project participants from Germany, Austria and Burkina Faso will exchange knowledge and experience in workshops and summer schools, addressing local stakeholders as well as PhD candidates and graduated students.
